

The Department for Accounting and Financing located at the Faculty of Business of the University of Botswana is intensively conducting research on the topics of cost management, developing accounting systems for small and micro enterprises etc. The Department’s research promotes the project in its objective to create training modules for students and microinsurance managers. Both of these multipliers are dependent on substantial education in accounting and financing. For developing those parts of the teaching and training modules knowledge and experience of the Departments’ staff is indispensible. Intensive cooperation promises to overcome obstacles produced by the complexity of financial sustainability of single micro insurances as well as of the micro insurance sector.

The University of Cologne is a primary point of contact in micro health insurance for development donors and agencies in Germany and the EU. 31 graduate students have built capacities in the field of microinsurance and were enabled to write their thesis on the topic. Numerous peer-reviewed articles on microinsurance have been recently published by the applicant. The human and institutional capacities are available to the upcoming project as well. Among many other activities, the University of Cologne has conducted the largest household survey (over 4900 households) about micro health insurance in India so far. Among other more theoretical publications, the applicant conducted two case studies on behalf of ILO/CGAP on micro health insurance in India; these experiences are available for the project as well.

The University of Ghana has an international reputation in carrying out research and training that promotes the socio-economic development of Ghana and Africa. ISSER is working in partnership with other Universities and institutions worldwide in joint research opportunities as a way of broadening the scope of our activities. For many years, the ISSER institute assists the government in finding in search of a solution to how best to provide proper health care. Extensive research has been done on human resource development in health care. Among many others, cost-effectiveness studies for specific interventions in the health sector have been conducted, research regarding socio-cultural and economic factors affecting morbidity of specific diseases and health care financing. Micro health insurance is a logical addition to the main students’ programme “Development studies” at the ISSER institute.

The Department of Economics (DOE) at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, is the main institution in Malawi for training economists through its undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. The vision of the programmes at the economics department is the provision of high-level training in economics and promotion of knowledge and understanding of economic issues relevant to the development of Malawi and the developing world. Moreover, the strategy of training economists for the developing world is achieved through one of the MA programs which are an international collaborative MA for Anglophone Africa run under the auspices of the African Economic Research Consortium. Extensive research has been done on health care financing and public spending.
